Glasgow Straight Talk (GST)

A new student body from the University of Glasgow which aims to work with charities in developing nations on sustainable projects for the promotion of positive sexual and reproductive health messages. We also aim to highlight issues surrounding sexual health in developing nations to the general public through events and publicity.

This summer a team of students will be volunteering in Uganda with the Straight Talk Foundation, a non-governmental organisation which aims to equip adolescents and children with sufficient accurate knowledge to make informed decisions about their own sexual behaviour and health.

It has been instrumental in the reduction of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Uganda, with the result that the country is hailed as one of Africa’s most successful in combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic. 30% of Ugandans had HIV in the 1980s, but through the work of the Straight Talk Foundation and similar charities this was reduced to just 6% in 2008.

The team will be teaching adolescents and children at schools across Uganda where often myths and misinformation about sexual health are rife. They will achieve this through short educational plays, Q&As sessions and 1 to 1 advice with the school pupils.
